January is a month of new beginnings for most people. For me January has been a month of change and stress. In the midst of troubles and adjustments I am all the more grateful to lean on our never changing God.
The first change happened right after New Years. One of the workers at the orphanage we go to went to the government officials and complained about a cult going to the orphanage. After a year of ministry the door has shut. The director still wants us to come and the kids are anxiously waiting. For now one woman’s lie has shut the door.
As one third of my ministry was being taken away another third was being altered. For church we rent a banquet hall that has two rooms. One room is for the service and one for children’s church. The entire month of January they have closed off the second room to us. I have had to teach children’s church in a noisy cafeteria. That has its challenges.
Other changes have been good but all the same any change causes some difficulties. Our small church of 40 has hired a youth pastor. Kids club is now twice a month. English club looks to be starting in January. Three new babies were born in our church.
As if life for me was too dull God decided to add a little excitement with an electrical fire this week. As I sit here writing the electrician is “hard at work” repairing the damage and calling me over every 10 minutes to pick up something he dropped.
Even today marks another change in my life. I am a year older. I can’t help but be amazed at how completely different I am today from the person I was when I arrived in Russia 3 ½ years ago.
All this change has me looking ahead to the biggest change 2010 has for me. I begin my home assignment in July. I can’t wait to be back in the arms of family and, for a time, leave Russian worries and cares behind.

• Ability to adapt to changes.
• Finish this term well while still preparing for what is coming next.
